A large earthquake woke up some residents of California and western Nevada with a jolt Friday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake shook around 4:03 a.m. epicenter of the magnitude 6.5 earthquake is located about 35 miles west of Tonopah in Western Nevada, near the Monte Cristo Range.
The initial report put the magnitude at 6.4 before it was upgraded later in the morning and Several smaller aftershocks have been reported since then, including at least one earthquake of 5.1 magnitude.
Shaking has been felt in the Reno and Las Vegas areas and as far west as the Bay Area in California.
